What are braided reins used for?
Braided reins are versatile and practical, and can be used for riding and leading. When you are riding, they look smart and afford a good grip. You could also make a longer version of this rein to use for lunging or groundwork.
What length are full size reins?
Depending if you have a horse or pony, a full size rein should be 1.5m in length and for a pony 1.3m. For jumping or flat racing the full size rein will need to be shorter in length to 1.4m, for when a shorter hold is needed.
How long are standard English reins?

The standard length of an English rein is 54 inches—you want just enough length that when you hold the buckle, the horse can completely relax and lower its head without coming to contact.
What are Hunter reins?
The most commonly-seen reins in the hunter ring are laced reins. Each side is made of a long piece of leather that has two narrower strips of leather woven through it for grip.
What is a Rommel rein?
A Romal Rein is a closed rein composed of two distinct parts: the reins and the romal. The reins are attached to the bit with rawhide or leather loops, snaps, or rein chains. They make up approximately half the length of the entire piece of equipment.
What are mecate reins made of?
The mecate is a single length of rope measuring which attaches to the bosal to create a loop around the neck of the horse. The remaining rope is tied around the saddle horn and used as a lead. Mecate reins are typically braided from horsehair or nylon and can be found in a range of thickness options.
How is rein length measured?
Reins are usually measured done up as if on a bit, to the buckle at the hand end, and pony 48″, cob 52″, full 54″, x full 58″, they are usually measured for width in inches with pony 1/2″ wide, cob 5/8″ wide and full and x full 3/4″, but as yet there is no industry standard for any bridlework.
What reins do you use for dressage?
The snaffle bridle is the most commonly used because of its versatility and functionality. The snaffle bridle can be used for most English disciplines including jumping, dressage, and trail riding. It can be used with a snaffle bit or with a Pelham or curb bit. It consists of one bit and one set of reins.

We braid our stock romal reins with or without interweaves. We dye the red and brown rawhide here in our own shop. We condition our rawhide romal reins with Ray Holes’ Vaquero Rawhide Cream. Are your reins beveled?
Our romals are good for the show ring or every day use. Our 18, 24 and 30 plait are made from goat hide. These reins are made in Peru by some of the best braiders in the world. Our goat hide reins are never beveled. We have been making reins in Peru for over 23 years and have never seen any of these reins beveled.
