Which is better S30V or S35VN?
While both are premium steels, S35VN has slightly more toughness and can get a finer edge than S30V. S35VN has more niobium, which leads to finer carbides, increasing toughness and allowing it to get a finer edge. It’s unlikely you’ll notice much of a difference, but on paper, S35VN is better.
Is S30V steel hard to sharpen?
If you do need to sharpen it, I’ve found s30v to be a pretty tough steel to sharpen. Not that it’s more difficult, but it’s just literally a tough steel and is pretty abrasive resistant.
What is S30V hardness?
Aim hardness: 58-61 HRC.
What is 8Cr13MoV?
8Cr13MoV blade steel is a Chinese stainless-steel grade used commonly for home scissors and knives. The comparable hardness, low cost, and ease of manufacturing enabled 8Cr13MoV Steel to gain popularity in kitchen knives. Chinese grade is equivalent to Aichi AUS 8 steel with carbon content to the higher side.
Does S30V steel rust?
Corrosion resistance protects a knife from rusting, especially when exposed to salt, moisture, or acids. CPM S30V contains high levels of Chromium, offering it excellent corrosion resistance. However, just like knives made from other types of steel, CPM steel knives should not be neglected otherwise they will rust.
Is S30V good enough?
The corrosion resistance of S30V and the similar S35VN have been found to be better than CPM-154, in a range I would call “above average.” The corrosion resistance has been improved somewhat with the new S45VN, but S30V is good enough for many knives.
What is the difference between S30V and S35VN?
S35VN offers slightly better performance compared to the S30V. S90V offers high edge retention with low toughness and the same corrosion resistance compared to S30V. S110V offers high edge retention with low toughness and the same corrosion resistance compared to S30V.
What is the edge retention of S30V?
The edge retention of S30V is still pretty good relative to other knife steels, better than steels like XHP, Elmax, 154CM, 440C, etc. It is a bit below steels like ZDP-189, S90V, and 20CV/M390. With my own CATRA experiments the relative position of S30V is approximately the same, but I will be talking about those experiments in a future article.
What is S30V steel?
S30V is a knife steel produced by Crucible, released at the end of 2001 [1]. Crucible has been a part of the knife steel industry for many decades, such as with steels like 154CM which was developed in the late 1950’s and gained popularity in knives through Bob Loveless in the early 1970s. I wrote about the history of 154CM in this article.
What is the difference between the 20CV and the S30V?
154CM offers close edge retention to the S30V with lower corrosion resistance and toughness. 20CV offers superior edge retention and higher corrosion resistance compared to S30V with the same level of toughness.
